In September 2024, Donald Trump, who was running for U.S. president at the time, made a promise to “make America great again,” but “this time with crypto.” He made this promise while saying that a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform would help him do it. The project is called World Liberty Financial.
World Liberty Financial: Making America the Crypto Capital
Initial reports wrote that World Liberty Financial (https://www.worldlibertyfinancial.com/) was developed as a lending protocol or a marketplace for lending and borrowing cryptocurrencies.
However, it should be noted that the lending protocol is not yet functional. According to CoinGecko writer Loke Choon Khei, World Liberty Financial is expected to utilize the liquidity protocol with Aave, which means it will share revenues with the Aave Decentralized Autonomous Organization once fully launched.
As of this writing, the only function available on World Liberty Financial’s dApp is the
purchase of its native token, $WLFI, using $ETH, $USDT and $USDC.
On March 26, 2025, World Liberty Financial announced its plans to launch $USD1, an “institutional-ready stablecoin.”
USD1 will be 100% backed by short-term U.S. government treasuries, U.S. dollar deposits, and other cash equivalents. Initially, USD1 tokens will be minted on the Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain (BSC) blockchains, with plans to expand to other protocols in the future. Each token is intended to maintain a value of $1, fully backed by a reserve portfolio audited regularly by a third-party accounting firm.
